But godliness actually is a means of great gain, when accompanied by contentment. For we have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it either. And if we have food and covering, with these we shall be content.

1 Timothy 6:6-8

We ought to be thankful to God for the blessings and privileges we have today. We ought to be content as God’s will is always the right thing for us. Romans 8:28 says, “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” What the Devil and ungodly intend for evil God can use for good. We may not fully understand God’s blessings, but they are for our good. In this context “good” means to be more like Christ, to be conformed to his image. Believers have a closer relationship and walk with God by being conformed to the image of Christ. Our sanctification is not just our growth in righteousness, but it is at the heart of the Gospel.

Our Lord and Saviour is praying for us and keeping watch for our soul. We have nothing to fear. Shall we fear when the Lord of heaven and earth has already declared and testified that He will never leave nor forsake his people? Trust in God is key to contentment.

Paul wrote in Philippians 4:11-12, “Not that I speak from want; for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need.”

Paul taught his readers to be satisfied with Christ. Paul understood what it was like to have very little in material terms. He was humble. Paul did not have many earthly pleasures, he had daily necessities that God met. However, before he came to faith in Christ Paul had many earthly pleasures and riches. When the Apostle became a believer, he regarded his former life as worthless, empty, and vain compared to the life he has now with Christ as Lord and Saviour.

To help you address this issue here are some questions.

  1. Do you find yourself complaining to God about your current situation?
  2. Are you thankful for the blessings God has bestowed upon you?
  3. What do you complain about?
  4. Are you content with your current situation?
  5. Do you remember the many blessings of God?
