Is it possible to predict the future of a nation? I feel we can. In the light of the Bible, we can anticipate the way the United Kingdom will go. The Bible says in Galatians 6:7-9 says, “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary.” God is not mocked. We shall reap what we sow as a nation. Psalm 9:17 says, “The wicked will return to Sheol, Even all the nations who forget God.”

Proverbs 14:34 teaches, “Righteousness exalts a nation, But sin is a disgrace to any people.” If we sow righteousness then righteousness we shall reap. The principle that we read in Galatians is key for our nation’s future. Given that this was once a God-fearing and God-honouring nation, we are far removed from our glorious days of history. Britain has for the past 50 years been passing through a stage of rebellion. The 1960s was the decade of rebellion. One can only imagine that this stagnation towards biblical morality will only get worse. I fear that this land is heading for disaster. Britain is heading toward moral, political, ethical, and social disaster.

However, we can change this. If Christians stand up for biblical truth and encourage our nation to turn back to the Bible, the tide could turn if God grants mercy to our nation. I believe if we turn to biblical truth and godliness the Lord will bless our faithfulness. We must act now to protect our precious liberties not just for us here today but for future generations. We must preserve them for our children and our grandchildren. We are at risk of losing many freedoms in the United Kingdom that generations past fought and died to protect.

So much has changed in this country over the past 50 years. There was a time in this country when you could go out for the day and leave the doors unlocked without fear of a burglary. The community spirit has gone in Britain nowadays. During the Second World War (1939-45) villages banded together to support each other in good and hard times. If your neighbour’s home was bombed the family next door would take you in and look after you. There was a time in Britain when you could pop next door to borrow a pint of milk until the morning. That sticking together and community spirit can still be seen in Britain in times of crisis but not like it was in times past.

Television has changed greatly. There was a time in Britain when there was good clean family shows on. Now television is full of unclean language, ungodly behaviour, and unsuitable content. The messages portrayed on the screen are getting more and more unholy. Television has turned into the devil-vision. A few decades ago, there was almost no bad language on the screen. Britain is famous for some of the greatest comedy shows ever made. This was a time when comedy was clean and wholesome. Sadly, TV companies do not make them like that anymore.

Fashion in Britain has changed. There was once a time when modesty was stylish and popular. Men wore suits, women wore modest dresses. Now there seems to be more and more flesh on show. The moral code that prevailed in the 1940s and 1950s has changed greatly. In some cases, for the better, but not all. Several moral changes were made in the 1960s. Many legal changes occurred in that decade. Abortion was made legal, and the decriminalisation of homosexual acts and capital punishment came to an end. Also, the position of women in society changed in the 1960s. In the 1990s only 1 in 7 people attended church regularly on Sundays. As Britain changed our values changed. Some were for the better and some were for our ruin. Man’s laws cannot make moral what God has already declared to be immoral. The contraceptive pill became legalised for women in 1967. This came as a result of the sexual promiscuity of the decade and the pill was introduced as an attempt to combat unwanted or unplanned pregnancies. The pill just made the situation worse. The decade of “free sex” caused many sexual diseases. In 2018 the Republic of Ireland voted to repeal the eighth amendment of the Irish constitution, which protected the life of the unborn in the womb. Irish voters decided in favour of abortion. Before the repeal of the eighth Amendment, many women travelled to the United Kingdom for an abortion.

If you were to ask, “the silent generation” (people born between 1926 and 1945) about the Britain they grew up in they would tell you that the Britain of today is nothing like the Britain that they once knew. Even the “baby boomer generation” (people born between 1946 and 1964) would say something similar to the generation before them. One of the Bible passages above mentions sowing to the flesh which is referring to self-indulgence. Our nation has surrendered to the tendency to sin. The country has changed because sin is popular. Unconverted mankind will always freely choose to sin against God and His perfect moral standards. God must intervene to prevent sinful decisions. Adam and Eve questioned God’s authority in the Garden of Eden and many nations and societies have followed suit.

The Bible verse from Galatians mentions sowing to the spirit this means completely submitting to the Holy Spirit and allowing Christ to live both in and through us. We once did this as a nation. The influence that Christianity has had on the land is vast. One of the greatest blessings, I believe to be bestowed to this nation was the English Reformation. The evidence of which we can still see today.

Just look back in history, God has blessed the United Kingdom greatly. He has honoured our faithfulness to Him. We were once the most powerful and feared nation on earth. The British Empire was the largest in history. I believe it is no coincidence that a large number of former British Empire nations were granted their independence when Britain started to rebel against God. If you look at the history of the British Empire, it was built when England and later Britain had a strong evangelical standard. Our Empire was a method of preaching the Gospel to many nations and people groups around the world. The British Empire was by no means a perfect model of dignity, nevertheless, God gave us the empire for a reason. Sadly, many leaders and rulers of the empire abused it for their own gain. There are many aspects of the history of the British Empire that were wrong and indeed sinful. However, I believe the British Empire overall was a force for good, despite her many faults.

Now, this precious stone set in the silver sea, this blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England is but a shadow of her once glorious days. If Britain turns back to God, I do not doubt in my mind her afflictions will begin to draw to a close. The Holy Bible warns us clearly that anyone who sows wickedness will not escape the fruit of their labour. The United Kingdom is going through the fruits of sowing corruption. There are consequences for both people and nations that defy God’s truths and clear instructions.

We discovered earlier that Britain has a great history and one worthy of celebrating. I recommend you read a book called, “The Trumpet Sounds for Britain” by David E. Gardner. This will allow you to explore the great past of Britain and how God worked in this land. In the modern age, Britain’s leaders have kicked godliness out of schools and other places of education. Many conservative voices have been banned from speaking at public events. Cancel culture and political correctness are damaging many freedoms in the Western world. We have removed God from our schools and taught other belief systems as a substitute for true holiness and faithfulness. As a nation, we have said, “We do not want nor need the Lord.” We are turning our backs on God, let us pray that God will not do the same to the British nation.

Christian, you have a responsibility to stand up for the truth of Scripture. We are called to speak up and not be silent. A patriotic citizen will warn the nation in love. Do not be ashamed to speak of Christ and his message. Only God can change the course of our nation, but we must proclaim the glorious Gospel of grace. God’s people must cry out to Him to convict and convert hearts to Him. Our only hope for broken Britain is to return to the Maker’s instructions.

Cry loudly, do not hold back; Raise your voice like a trumpet, And declare to My people their transgression And to the house of Jacob their sins.

Isaiah 58:1
