But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. “God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.

John 4:23-24

Those who worship God must do so in spirit and in truth. God is not like mankind. He does not have a physical frame nor is God limited by time. God is always present and should always be worshipped in all places at all times. True worshippers of God worship him in spirit and truth. This means that all those who give worship and glory to God must worship the One true God, who is a Spirit revealed in Holy Scripture. The Bible teaches us the truth concerning God. Therefore, the message and teachings of Scripture are the central focus of true Christian worship.

The soul that is in sin cannot worship God faithfully. Those who have been made alive by the spirit of God worship him with joy in their heart. In Matthew 15:8-9 we learn a fundamental truth about worship. The Lord Jesus Christ says those who worship him from their hearts are worshipping him correctly. Notice in that text the warning Christ gives against false worship. Those who teach the word of man are guilty of false worship. You can hear many of these preachers today. They will say all manner of things that Scripture does not teach. They will often twist or misrepresent Scripture to mean something it does not.

It is particularly important that Christian people worship God as Scripture instructs them to. Here are some questions to help you search your heart concerning true worship.

  1. Is coming to worship meetings your primary purpose on the Lord’s Day?
  2. Is your mind full of the holy fear of God?
  3. Do you really love to praise the name of God?
  4. Have you partaken in the Lord’s Supper without a deep examination of yourself?
  5. Do you listen to the sermon and take in what is being said?
  6. Do you seek to be a doer of the word?
  7. Are you seeking personal holiness daily?

All the questions above are crucial when thinking about the right worship of God. Confess the sins you need to. This is also an act of worship. Give God the right amount of respect that is due to Him as your heavenly Father.
