Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, And whoever is intoxicated by it is not wise.
Proverbs 20:1
I am sure you have heard of the phrase, “a slave to the demon drink.” Sadly, this is true for many people today. In our society, we find many in bondage to alcohol. The wisdom behind indulging continuously in strong drinks is foolishness. Rather than addressing and dealing with the issue of why they indulge in drink people try to dull the pain and try to forget about their worries or block out bad memories. Alcohol does not sort out your concerns or problems it just causes more pain. You will not find answers to life and hardships at the bottom of a glass or bottle.
Christ has promised to help all those who trust in Him and call on his name. Those who depend on Christ do not need the crutch of alcoholic beverages to cope with worries, cares, fears, and problems. Christ can give you peace that passes all understanding. Getting intoxicated will not and cannot give you peace or comfort.
There is nothing sinful about drinking a small amount of alcohol in moderation, but if you’re depending on alcohol to function then this is a sin and must be addressed. Drunkenness and alcohol dependence is a major issue. Drinking simply to get drunk does not honour the Lord and is also very harmful. I believe that if alcohol was discovered today, tomorrow it would be banned. The damage that alcohol has caused society and individuals is vast. Abstaining from alcohol is wise, but not essential to be a faithful Christian.
Having said this, we must not cause others to stumble or compromise the truth of God’s Word. Do you turn to God in times of trouble? Do you truly trust God with every situation and circumstance? The standard is the Word of God alone. Drinking large amounts of alcohol on a regular basis is a very slippery slope to sin. How can we truly honour and love the Lord while indulging regularly in strong drinks, especially from a financial position and considering the biblical command to take care of our body and soul?
Scripture teaches us to not be drunk with wine but to be filled with the Spirit. Alcohol is dangerous and bites like a viper. It causes pain, sorrow, and woe. Alcohol causes brain damage, depression, liver failure, and many other physical ailments. As Christians, we ought to set an example before the world. Our lives ought to be an example of godliness and not one that leads people into sin.
In 1881 the Sunday Closing Act was implemented in Wales. This law prohibited the selling of alcohol on the Lord’s Day. The law required the closure of all public houses in Wales on Sundays. This law was lifted as recently as 1961. Wales just like the rest of the United Kingdom has fallen into grave error and sin in recent times. This law honoured the Lord’s Day, but now so many no longer keep this day holy. As a footnote to this, there were once laws protecting the Lord’s Day which made buying and selling illegal for some shops in England and Wales. The Sunday Trading Act 1994 has made it much easier for people to dishonour the Lord.
